The winds gusted and the oversized waves hit against the now-capsized voyaging canoe.  Maybe it was what he learned from his years as a lifeguard, or maybe it was just the strength of his inner spirit, but Eddie Aikau volunteered to paddle on the choppy seas toward the island of Lanai on his surfboard to find help. Later that night, the Hokulea was miraculously spotted from the air, and the U.S. Coast Guard promptly rescued the other members of the crew.  But the ocean gives and the ocean takes.  Eddie Aikau, one of Hawaii's greatest surfers and bravest souls, would never be seen alive again.
