Tragically in 1997, "The Gentle Giant" with the angelic voice died of a weight-related illness. Over 10,000 people attended the funeral for their beloved Bruddah Iz. In recognition of the 10th anniversary of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's death in 2007, the Honolulu Advertiser and Mountain Apple recording company collaborated on a commemorative section for the newspaper. |

A free collector's single of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" was inserted in the Sunday paper for local residents. In addition, 4,000 copies were delivered free to Iz's hometown area along the Wai'anae Coast.
