A short-lived attempt to restore Queen Liliuokalani to power by royalists in 1895 resulted in Liliuokalani's imprisonment in a bedroom at Iolani Palace. The time of the Hawaiian monarchy had effectively passed. Queen Liliuokalani, an accomplished composer, is known for writing beautiful compositions such as the beloved Aloha 'Oe, a farewell song between two lovers. Local citizens still think of Aloha Oe as a love song from Queen Liliuokalani to the Hawaiian people, and tears often flow when it is played.
