For better or worse, the islands would continue their rapid transformation through the 20th century, becoming the 50th state in 1959.  Emotions were understandably high on November 23, 1993 when President Clinton signed Public Law 103-150, known as the "Apology Resolution." The Resolution was written "To acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the January 17, 1893 overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii, and to offer an apology to Native Hawaiians on behalf of the United States for the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii."
