But the royalty did not entirely forget about the beautiful beach area and, throughout the 1800s, the kings and queens of Hawaii maintained their retreats and second residences here. While important business was conducted in Honolulu, the members of Hawaii's royalty and upper class traveled back to Waikiki to relax and have fun.  They held lavish dinner parties and luaus, while trying their hands at surfing, outrigger canoe riding, and seaside bathing.
