It was in the late 1800s that Hawaii's elite began to build their large residences right along Waikiki Beach.  At the same time, bathhouses started to appear, signaling a potential for tourism.  The Park Beach Hotel, Waikiki's first, opened in 1888, and the Sans Souci Hotel followed in 1893.  Writer Robert Louis Stevenson famously stayed here and wrote... "If anyone desires such old-fashioned things as lovely scenery, quiet, pure air, clear sea water, good food, and heavenly sunsets hung out before his eyes over the Pacific and the distant hills of Waianae, I recommend him cordially to the Sans Souci."  Today, Sans Souci (without care) Beach fronts The New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel, and offers a delightfully secluded escape.
