Kuhio Beach Park is named for Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole, an adopted son of King Kalakaua.  In 1895, Prince Kuhio served a one-year prison term for his role in attempting to restore Queen Lili'uokalani to her throne... after the Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown by U.S. and European interests two years earlier.  Prince Kuhio later became active in the political landscape and served as Hawaii's second delegate to Congress for nineteen years.
