Some critics have said that Singapore is bland, repressive and comes up short in providing programs, rights, and adequate public welfare for its citizens. Growing income inequality, for example, is a serious problem that the PAP will have to face head-on.  Others admire the work ethic, resourcefulness, and incredible success that have been cultivated here in a world-class city-state with a growing and diverse population. It doesn’t hurt that Singapore offers executives and the wealthy incredible incentives with low taxes, pro-business policies, and a strong and stable government.  In 1993, William Gibson famously wrote an article titled “Disneyland with the Death Penalty” for Wired magazine criticizing Singapore for its “relentlessly G-rated experience, micromanaged by a state that has the look and feel of a very large corporation.”
