Take the Pali Hwy (61) again back over the Koolau mountain range to head toward the sleepy beachside community of Kailua.  Ulupo Heiau, located by 1200 Kailua Road, is a sacred site that was built around 900 A.D. as a temple for commoners to worship in. Recent restoration efforts have increased awareness on the island for this important cultural site.  The adjacent Kawainui Marsh is a natural wetland that provides a living habitat for local wildlife.
